The wait for the next chapter of Matt Reeves’ Gotham has already stretched far beyond what fans initially expected. Since The Batman arrived in 2022, the sequel has gone through multiple release-date changes, while plot details have remained tightly guarded. Even with production now underway, DC has offered little beyond a first glimpse of Robert Pattinson back in the Batsuit.
That secrecy has only added to the curiosity surrounding what Reeves is building this time. The filmmaker has previously spoken about wanting to expand the world established in The Batman, while Pattinson has had to navigate a script that was kept under unusually tight security. Reeves revealed last year that the screenplay was given to Pattinson in a locked pouch, with the actor even retaining it in the secure case after reading it.
Now, Pattinson has offered perhaps the clearest hint yet that the sequel will not simply repeat the formula of its predecessor. Speaking to Collider, the actor described The Batman: Part II as “a real left turn” from the first film, while insisting that it will retain elements of the atmosphere that defined Reeves’ Gotham. “It’s so ambitious,” Pattinson said, adding that he is excited to see how the finished film turns out.
The actor also suggested that the scale of Reeves’ vision is evident in the screenplay itself. Pattinson called the script “incredibly dense” and said there is so much happening that it can be difficult to take in the entire story at once. However, he noted that the pieces begin to make sense as Reeves reveals more of his plan, describing the director as someone who clearly has the entire film mapped out in his head.
Interestingly, Pattinson's comments suggest that the sequel's departure will not mean abandoning the identity of the first film. While calling it a “different take” and a “left turn,” he stressed that it somehow retains elements of the original film's feel. That could point to Reeves changing the scale or storytelling approach while holding on to the noir-infused atmosphere that surrounded Bruce Wayne's first year as Batman.
The sequel has already expanded its ensemble considerably. Pattinson is joined by returning actors Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot and others, while newcomers include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch. Their respective roles, however, remain largely under wraps.
There has also been plenty of speculation about how far Reeves intends to take the world beyond The Batman. The filmmaker shared the first camera-test footage of Pattinson's return in July, alongside yet another release-date change. The brief footage showed Batman in a redesigned suit, with what appeared to be snow surrounding him, offering little in terms of story but reinforcing the darker visual identity of the sequel.
The long wait itself has become part of the conversation around the film. Originally scheduled for October 2025, The Batman: Part II was pushed to 2026 and subsequently to 2027 before Warner Bros moved it again to February 18, 2028. Variety reported that the latest shift gives Reeves additional time, including for post-production. The gap between the two films will consequently stretch to almost six years.
