For years, the Primetime Emmy Awards have largely followed a familiar formula: television's biggest stars gather on a Sunday night, a comedian takes the stage as host, and the industry's most acclaimed shows compete for the top honours. This year's ceremony, however, is changing several of those familiar beats.
The shift is particularly visible in the choice of host. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay is taking charge of the ceremony, becoming the first woman to host the Emmys in 15 years. She has also worked with former Stephen Colbert writers on the show's material, signalling a departure from the traditional comedian-led format. The ceremony is also being held on a Monday, with NBC's NFL commitments prompting the change from the usual Sunday slot.
For viewers in India, the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 14 and stream live on JioHotstar in the early hours of September 15. The red carpet coverage is scheduled to begin at 4.30 am IST, while the awards ceremony will start at 5.30 am IST. The event will also be available on demand after the live telecast.
The nominations have set up a closely watched contest between some of television's biggest titles. HBO Max's The Pitt leads the field with 25 nominations, followed by Hacks with 24. Apple's Widow's Bay and Pluribus have 19 and 18 nominations, respectively, while Netflix's Beef has 16. Hacks, which is heading into its final season, has also set a record for the most Emmy nominations received by a comedy in a single year.
In the drama categories, The Pitt, Pluribus, Slow Horses, The Gilded Age, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Paradise, The Diplomat and Your Friends & Neighbors are competing for Outstanding Drama Series. The lead acting categories include Noah Wyle, Gary Oldman, Mark Ruffalo and Rufus Sewell among the nominees for drama, while Carrie Coon, Chase Infiniti, Keri Russell, Rhea Seehorn and Zendaya are in contention for lead actress.
The ceremony will also put the spotlight on several first-time nominees. The Television Academy noted that 28 first-time nominees were recognised across the performing categories, reflecting the presence of newer faces alongside established names such as Harrison Ford, Steve Carell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lisa Kudrow and Gary Oldman. Ford, at 84, is also in contention for his first Emmy for Shrinking.
The presenter lineup adds another layer of star power, with Zendaya, Jon Hamm, Florence Pugh, Macaulay Culkin, Sally Field, Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Harbour, Dan Levy, Keke Palmer, Amy Poehler and Rachel Sennott among those announced. The ceremony will also mark the 30th anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with David Boreanaz and Sarah Michelle Gellar, while Kate Jackson, Cheryl Ladd and Jaclyn Smith will reunite for a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Charlie's Angels.
For Indian audiences, the awards also carry an additional point of interest with Priyanka Chopra Jonas' Heads of State nominated for Outstanding Television Movie. The film, which also stars Idris Elba and John Cena, is competing against Miss You, Love You, People We Meet on Vacation, Remarkably Bright Creatures and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War.
The ceremony will also feature an In Memoriam performance by Grammy-nominated singer Noah Kahan, who will perform 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'. With The Pitt attempting to repeat its drama-series success, Hacks looking to close its run on a high and a new generation of nominees entering the race, the 78th Emmys is set to be as much about the changing face of television as the winners themselves.
