Spider-Man fans will have a reason to celebrate Father’s Day weekend in 2027. Sony has shifted the release of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, moving it up by one week to June 18, 2027. The new date means the highly anticipated animated feature will debut in IMAX and premium formats just in time for the Juneteenth holiday as well. It was previously slated for June 25.
The film is the third entry in the blockbuster trilogy that kicked off with the Oscar-winning Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and continued with Across the Spider-Verse (2023). The original raked in $393.6 million worldwide and revolutionised the animated landscape, while its sequel more than doubled that success with $690.6 million, thanks to a growing fan base and word-of-mouth on streaming and home entertainment.
The second instalment left audiences hanging, quite literally, as Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) was stranded in an alternate universe, trapped by a darker version of himself. That cliffhanger ending has only amplified anticipation for Beyond the Spider-Verse, widely regarded as one of the most eagerly awaited animated releases on any studio’s calendar.
Bob Persichetti and Justin K Thompson return to direct, with Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and David Callaham penning the script. The voice cast also features Hailee Steinfeld and Daniel Kaluuya.
Interestingly, this is just the latest shuffle in the movie’s release history. At one point, Sony had it pegged for March 29, 2024, a mere nine months after Across the Spider-Verse. Many doubted the ambitious timeline, given the elaborate animation and the famously meticulous approach of Lord and Miller. The film has also held dates in early June 2027 before settling on its current slot.
