Andrew Garfield isn’t mincing words when it comes to his rumoured return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite ongoing speculation that the actor might reprise his Spider-Man role in Avengers: Doomsday, Garfield has made it clear that fans shouldn’t get their hopes up.
During a recent GQ fan Q&A, the Amazing Spider-Man star gave an emphatic response when asked if he or Tobey Maguire would appear in the upcoming superhero ensemble, set for release on December 18, 2026. “No, unequivocally no,” Garfield declared, leaving no room for doubt.
Garfield’s bluntness comes as a contrast to his past denials surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Before the film’s release, he famously brushed off speculation about returning to the role, only to later surprise audiences with his appearance alongside Tom Holland and Maguire.
Following that success, Garfield said he would be open to donning the suit again under the right creative circumstances. “I would 100% come back,” he told fans after the film’s release, adding that it “would have to be very weird,” citing the inventive tone of the Spider-Verse films as inspiration.
However, more recently, the two-time Oscar nominee has been consistent about not being involved in any upcoming Spider-Man projects. In a January interview with GQ UK, he quipped, “I’m going to disappoint you. Yeah, no. But I know no one’s going to trust anything I say from now on,” referencing his earlier secret-keeping about No Way Home.
Garfield first played Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and its 2014 sequel before joining the multiversal trio in No Way Home. While fans continue to dream of another crossover, the actor’s latest comments suggest he’s hanging up the web-shooters, at least for now.
A year ahead of its release, Avengers: Doomsday, headlined by Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom, has officially wrapped shooting. Directed by the Russo Brothers, the film is written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely.
The film will feature heroes from Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, and the X-Men joining hands to square off against Doctor Doom. The film's star cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, and Pedro Pascal.
