Andrew Garfield, who gave a notable performance as Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin in David Fincher's critically acclaimed The Social Network (2010) has opened up on whether he would return for the second part, which was recently titled as The Social Reckoning.
"No, no. Eduardo is in Singapore having a good time," he told IndieWire in an interview, shutting down any possibilities for his comeback to the sequel.
This might be because Eduardo Saverin, who co-founded Facebook alongside Mark Zuckerberg, played little role in the company’s later growth. In 2009, he gave up his US citizenship and relocated to Singapore. While many speculated that the move was to sidestep a hefty tax burden, Saverin has maintained that his decision was purely motivated by a desire to live and work in Singapore.
Despite not being involved in The Social Reckoning, The Amazing Spider-Man revealed that he is excited to see the new film.
Starring Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Bill Burr and Jeremy Strong in lead roles, The Social Reckoning, directed by Aaron Sorkin, is set for release on October 9, 2026. It is written by Sorkin from his own script as he did for the original film, which earned him an Oscar award.
In the new film, Madison plays a a young Facebook engineer named Frances Haugen who joins hands with Jeff Horwitz (White), a Wall Street Journal reporter who is on a dangerous mission to bring the social network’s biggest secrets to light. Strong has been confirmed to play Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
Set 17 years after the events of The Social Network, The Social Reckoning draws inspiration from Jeff Horwitz’s Wall Street Journal series “The Facebook Files”. It will explore the company’s internal findings on misinformation, its harmful effects on teenagers, and its role in the lead-up to the January 6, 2021, insurrection.
Sorkin produces The Social Reckoning along with Todd Black, Peter Rice and Stuart Besser with filming expected to start next month.
Directed by David Fincher, The Social Network portrays the founding of the social networking website Facebook and stars Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, with Andrew Garfield as Eduardo Saverin, Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker, Armie Hammer as Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, and Max Minghella as Divya Narendra.
