Less than a month after its release in theatres, Prabhas' The Raja Saab is all set to make its OTT premiere. Directed by Maruthi, the horror-comedy was mounted as a big-budget entertainer and was released ahead of the Sankranti festival. Although it opened with over Rs 100 crore worldwide at the box office, the film was critically panned by audiences. Despite the grand sets, VFX work and pan-Indian release, The Raja Saab failed to resonate with fans and general public.
Apart from Prabhas, the film features Niddhi Agerwal, Malavika Mohanan, and Riddhi Kumar as the female leads. Bollywood actors Sanjay Dutt and Boman Irani play key roles, while veteran actress Zarina Wahab makes a comeback to Telugu cinema after a long gap.
In The Raja Saab, Prabhas plays a devoted grandson caring for his grandmother, who is battling Alzheimer’s and remains obsessed with reuniting with her estranged husband, Kanakaraju (Sanjay Dutt). His quest to trace their forgotten history takes him to Hyderabad, where a trail of buried secrets leads to a sinister mansion, revealing that his grandfather is not who he believed, but a menacing supernatural entity.
Our CE review of the film read, "On paper, the core idea — involving royal betrayal, hypnotism, revenge, and generational trauma — sounds interesting, almost like a modern-day Chandamama tale. A cruel man manipulates a queen using tantric powers, steals her wealth, and leaves her to live a miserable life. Years later, her grandson discovers the truth and seeks revenge. While the premise has potential, the execution is deeply flawed. The film lacks strong character arcs, emotional weight, or engaging conflicts."
The film is produced by TG Vishwa Prasad and Krithi Prasad under People Media Factory. The technical team has cinematographer Karthik Palani, production designer Rajeevan, and editor Kotagiri Venkateshwara Rao.
The Raja Saab hits OTT platform JioHotstar on February 6.
