Veteran lyricist and writer Siva Shakthi Datta, father of Oscar winning composer MM Keeravani, passed away on Monday, at the age of 92. He died at his residence in Manikonda, Hyderabad, due to age-related health issues.
Datta, known for his refined command over classical Telugu and Sanskrit, made notable contributions to Telugu cinema through his poetic and culturally rich lyrics. His work spanned films such as Baahubali, RRR, Magadheera, Sri Ramadasu, and Rajanna. Often collaborating with his son Keeravani and his brother, director K. Raghavendra Rao, he brought a distinctive classical and mythological tone to film songs. Notable tracks include ‘Mamathala Thalli,’ ‘Raamam Raghavam,’ and ‘Nalla Nallani Kalla.’
Beyond cinema, Datta was recognised as a literary figure with deep interest in traditional arts and philosophy. He also directed the film Chandrahas in 2007.
His passing has prompted tributes from across the Telugu film industry. Actor and politician Pawan Kalyan expressed his condolences, stating, “I am saddened to learn of the demise of Shri Siva Shakthi Datta, father of music director Keeravani. I pray for his soul to rest in peace. He had great respect for art and literature and contributed significantly to Telugu and Sanskrit lyricism. My deepest sympathies to Keeravani gaaru and family during this time of loss.”
Siva Shakthi Datta is survived by MM Keeravani and other family members. His last rites are being held in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
