With Sardar 2 nearing its theatrical release, filmmaker PS Mithran has found himself fielding questions about what comes next. While the director has several star collaborations that have been discussed over the years, not all of them have progressed beyond the narration stage.
In a recent interaction with SS Music, Mithran looked back at some of those projects, including stories he had taken to actors such as Suriya and Rajinikanth. He also shed light on the much-discussed film he was approached to direct with Dhanush, revealing that the subject actually comes from a prominent writer outside Tamil cinema.
But it was his revelation about a film he had discussed with Toxic actor Yash that offered a glimpse into what Mithran considers his most ambitious idea yet. According to the filmmaker, the project is an adventure film in the vein of Indiana Jones, but with a strong emotional layer at its centre. “The story I narrated to Yash sir is my most ambitious project. It’s an adventure story like Indiana Jones, with a strong emotional core. It’ll be superb if it happens. It’s my dream project,” he said.
Mithran explained that the film did not progress due to issues surrounding timelines. However, he remains keen on the subject and hopes the project can eventually materialise. The director also clarified the reports surrounding his proposed collaboration with Dhanush. He said the story was written by veteran screenwriter Vijayendra Prasad and was brought to him by Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions. “I liked the story. It’s not finalised yet. All the talks are happening now,” Mithran said.
He further recalled that several star projects were discussed following Irumbu Thirai. Mithran had narrated multiple stories to Suriya, while he also met Rajinikanth in 2021 and discussed a script with him. None of those collaborations, however, eventually took shape.
Meanwhile, Mithran is awaiting the release of Sardar 2, the sequel to his 2022 spy thriller. Karthi and Rajisha Vijayan reprise their roles, while SJ Suryah, Malavika Mohanan and Ashika Ranganath are part of the sequel. Sam CS has composed the music for the film, which is scheduled to hit theatres on September 10.
