With the Suriya starrer Karuppu, set for a release on May 14, rumours have set off that the film is moving to another date owing to the political uncertainty as the swearing-in ceremony of actor-turned-politician Vijay, whose Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is the single largest party after the recent state assembly elections.

The film's director, RJ Balaji, has denied these rumours and clarified on his social media handle that the film is releasing as planned. The filmmaker wrote that "Karuppan will arrive on the date as planned on the date he promised. Festival is coming, keep the firecrackers ready."

While the plot has not been officially revealed by the makers, the promotional materials of the film suggest that Suriya plays Saravanan, an advocate, who, when he cannot serve justice through legal means, is possessed by the deity Karuppasaami to provide divine justice.

The film features Trisha as the female lead, reuniting her with her Aaru (2005) co-star Suriya. The supporting cast includes Yogi Babu, acclaimed Malayalam actor Indrans, Sshivada, Swasika, famous for Lubber Pandhu, Natty, Supreeth Reddy, and Anagha Maya Ravi.

Karuppu's technical crew features music by Sai Abhyankkar, cinematography by GK Vishnu, editing by Kalaivanan, art direction by Arun Venjaramoodu, and stunt choreography by Vikram Mor. The project also marks a reunion for Suriya with his NGK producers, as well as RJ Balaji with his Sorgavaasal makers — SR Prabhu and SR Prakash Babu of Dream Warrior Pictures.
