In September last year, a stampede happened during his political rally, causing multiple deaths. The actor still faces a CBI investigation in relation to his role in the Karur stampede. Subsequently, his film Jana Nayagan's release faced some uncertainty, following a row with the Censor Board. Recent reports suggest that the board is set to review the film soon and is expected to give it a release clearance certificate soon.
On the personal front, Vijay's wife Sankgeetha filed for divorce at a court in Chengalpet. In her petition, Sankgeetha alleged that her relationship with the actor-politician has been broken following his alleged affair with an actress. "I will take care of all that," he said, telling his supporters not to feel worried or hurt but rather stay confident. "Let us focus on people's problems together," he told a rapturous audience.

Vijay also faces a penalty following an unfavourable verdict in a tax case concerning his remuneration for the film Puli.
