In his three-decade-long career, Madhavan has portrayed a wide range of characters across multiple languages and continues to enjoy a successful run with back-to-back hits. With several projects in the pipeline, the actor shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. However, he is clear that he has no plans to return to headlining the kind of commercial entertainers that defined his career in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

In an exclusive interview with Cinema Express, Madhavan said, "I know that if I do a commercial film, it will become a hit. If you have a proven formula, it can keep working for years. But I fear when I look back at my journey. I ask myself what I want to be remembered for. I could continue playing the chocolate-boy roles or do films without much meaning, simply for the sake of it. Or I could choose stories shaped by the experiences I've gained in life. I have immense love for cinema, and as an actor, you always yearn to explore the full extent of your talent. That's when I realised I couldn't do that if I limited myself to only commercial films," he explained ahead of the release of GDN.

Madhavan said this realisation fundamentally changed the way he selects scripts, leading him to collaborate with storytellers who have something meaningful to say to today's audiences. "Look at what's happening in India and across the world. Audiences today are far more aware and empowered. As storytellers, actors, and directors, we need to ask ourselves how aspirational we want our work to be. That's how I choose my films now. Whether it's Vikram Vedha, the Breathe series, Dhurandhar, Shaitaan, or the Tamil films I'm currently working on, I keep experimenting with my roles and the stories I tell. Until I fail, I know I can keep trying," he added.

The recently-released GDN trailer shows the British's efforts to take down a younger GD Naidu for his actions against the government, such as tax evasion and other activities. Besides starring in it, R Madhavan is also credited for the film's screenplay, alongside director Krishnakumar Ramakumar of Oho Enthan Baby fame. It is slated for a July 17 release in theatres.

Besides GDN, Madhavan also has Mithran Jawahar's Adhirshtasaali in Tamil which is awaiting release. He recently saw the re-release of Thambi and his other hit film Run, directed by Lingusamy will release once again on July 10. He is also starring in the lead in the Netflix's upcoming series Legacy. The revered star also recently won the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honor, for his outstanding contributions to Indian cinema.
