Could two of Tamil cinema’s most prominent commercial filmmakers be coming together for a new project? An interesting buzz is currently doing the rounds in the industry about a possible collaboration between Shankar and AR Murugadoss.
According to industry sources, Murugadoss is said to be in discussions around a story developed by Shankar’s writing team. While the nature of their involvement is still unclear, the buzz has naturally sparked curiosity given the filmmakers’ respective track records in large-scale commercial cinema.
At this stage, however, it is not known if the discussions will eventually materialise as a feature film or remain at the story-development stage. There is also speculation about the extent of Shankar’s involvement, with it being unclear whether he would remain part of the writing process or whether Murugadoss could eventually take over as director. Neither filmmaker nor their respective teams have officially confirmed the development.
Both directors have been associated with ambitious projects in recent years. Shankar, who most recently directed Game Changer with Ram Charan, has been working on his long-discussed adaptation of Su Venkatesan’s historical novel Velpari. Recent reports have also suggested that he could take up an action thriller before embarking on the much larger Velpari, which he has envisioned as a three-part project.
Murugadoss, meanwhile, last directed Madharaasi, starring Sivakarthikeyan, Rukmini Vasanth and Vidyut Jammwal. The filmmaker had previously collaborated with several leading Tamil stars, including Vijay, Suriya, Ajith Kumar and Rajinikanth. Interestingly, Shankar himself had praised Madharaasi, calling it an engaging commercial entertainer and specifically lauding Murugadoss for blending its love and crime tracks effectively.
Murugadoss is also attached to an upcoming Hindi action entertainer starring Sunny Deol, with Jyotika in a prominent role. Whether the latest buzz develops into an actual Shankar-Murugadoss film remains to be seen. For now, the possible coming together of two filmmakers known for their distinctly commercial storytelling styles is certainly an intriguing prospect.
