Anirudh is currently on a roll, delivering back-to-back hit numbers for major star-led films. As he enters his 15th year as a composer, he opened up about the discussions surrounding his decision to sing many of his own songs. In an interview with Billboard, Anirudh explained that several factors come into play when deciding whether to lend his voice to a song.
Anirudh shared that singing his own songs came naturally to him, as he would often start singing while composing. "Later, when directors started liking my voice, I began singing more. Sometimes, when I felt a song would work well, I would sing it myself. Gradually, I started performing more on stage as well," he said.
He then opened up about the discourse surrounding Arijit Singh’s singing and the perceived “fatigue” around his voice. "In Arijit’s case, because you spend so much time with a song, the emotion we initially try to convey takes time for the singer to catch on. Sometimes they understand it immediately, while at other times, it takes a little longer. But when you’re pressed for time and need to deliver the song quickly, directors who have been hearing your voice for months can be taken aback when you suddenly change your voice. That’s one of the reasons why I end up singing more songs than I’m supposed to."
Some of his best playback singing tracks include 'Why This Kolaveri Di (3), 'Oh Penne' (Vanakkam Chennai), 'Senjitaley' (Remo), 'Vaathi Coming' (Master), 'Aaluma Doluma' (Vedalam) and 'Pathala Pathala' (Vikram), among many others.
The composer is currently garnering a lot of praise for his 15-track album for Lokesh Kanagaraj's DC, directed by Arun Matheswaran. The action thriller has crossed the Rs 50 crore mark at the box office.
