Ram Gopal Varma's Satya is regarded as one of the greatest-ever films made in India, let alone in the gangster genre. As for Ranjith Sankar, known for helming films such as Passenger, the Pretham franchise and the Punyalan series, Lokesh Kanagaraj's latest film DC has a similar impact. The filmmaker took to social media and expressed his admiration for the film, directed by Arun Matheswaran of Captain Miller fame.
He wrote, "Almost 30 years back.. I watched Satya in Trivandrum Kripa.. And walked out.. Wondering if I can ever touch this medium.. And today, I saw DC."
The film marks the debut of Lokesh as a lead actor; earlier, he made cameo appearances in films, including one of his own directorial ventures, Master. It also stars Wamiqa Gabbi in an important role.
The film follows Devadas (Lokesh) and those close to him as they fight to safeguard an innocent family that has been subject to police brutality even as they evade a ruthless police officer, finding justice and redemption while forming unlikely bonds in their journey. It has been described as a blend of Devdas and Bonnie and Clyde.
The film clocks in at around 2 hours and 20 minutes, and it has garnered plenty of appreciation for the technical departments, especially Anirudh's soundtrack. Several filmmakers and other industry professionals, including actor Suriya, have appreciated the film, making special notes of Anirudh's music for it.
DC also stars Sanjana Krishnamoorthy, Avinash Raghudevan, Krish Dayal, and Thalaivasal Vijay. Since the release of the film, those on social media, who had been critical of Lokesh Kanagaraj's capabilities after Coolie and his performance in a cameo role in Kattalan, have now started to express their appreciation for the actor-director.
