It is well-known that noted director-actor Sundar C joined politics recently and was announced as a candidate for the Madurai Central constituency for the upcoming 2026 state Legislative Assembly elections. After being in the film industry for over three decades, his entry into the political fray had surprised and shocked the film fraternity as well as general public. Criticising his sudden political entry, Prakash Raj slammed Sundar C, questioning how he decided to enter politics when he had been actively filming until just three days before the official announcement.

He raised these statements while he was campaigning in Madurai where the filmmaker will be contesting as a representative of the Puthiya Neethi Katchi (PNK) under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), in alliance with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). "You are a film director. Sure, come join politics. But how did you come here? Until three days ago, he was on the shooting spot, directing movies. Were you there or not? Suddenly, when you were announced as a candidate, were you yourself surprised or not?," he asked.

"Until three days ago, be it for Madurai or for the state or Tamil Nadu or for Indian politics, he didn't stand up and give his voice for any issue. You presented an image of being a talented filmmaker and when your name was announced out of the blue, would you switch to a politician's attire and immediately have the desire of being an MLA and come here? Are you all going to cheat the people of Madurai?," he further questioned.

Sundar C: I won't criticise Vijay or his party

Prakash Raj went on to ask which party the filmmaker was representing. "You joined the Puthiya Neethi Katchi. But what are its principles? It has an alliance with the BJP. That party cannot come here and win, right? The people of Madurai know. For that, two seats were given and how is it that three days prior, your name was suddenly announced? You came waltzing in when your name was revealed. You must have struggled a lot to become a director over many years. How come you can immediately be an MLA? You need to know the people of the city, what has happened here, the number of wards and more. You are highlighting only the downsides of things here, you also need to celebrate the highs of the place. What kind of politics is this?"

The actor further compared Sundar C to his wife and fellow politician Khushbu, questioning how he could secure an MLA seat when she has been active in politics for over a decade and is yet to obtain one herself.

On the film front, Prakash Raj, who has been actively acting in films across Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam industries, was last seen in Adivi Sesh's Dacoit: A Love Story. Up next, he has a slew of films in his kitty including the delayed Jana Nayagan, G2, Varanasi, Spirit, Father and others.

Sundar C was last seen in Gangers (2025), and is currently engaged in filming of Vishal's upcoming project Purushan. He also has Mookuthi Amman 2 and an untitled film with Dhorai VZ.
