Earlier today, a stampede at actor Vijay’s political rally for his party TVK killed over 30 individuals and injured more than 60 others. Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed the number of casualties while adding that 24 doctors have immediately departed for Karur for treatment to those affected. Chief Minister MK Stalin would also rush to the location this night, considering how serious the situation there is.
Many celebrities took to social media and reacted to the news. Aghast by the incident, Kamal Haasan offered his deepest condolences to the victims’ dear ones while urging the government to take swift action. Meanwhile, Rajinikanth and Mari Selvaraj stated that the incident is shocking and brings immense sorrow to them. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and more have shared similar sentiments.
Vijay had started the next phase of his campaign for the Assembly election in 2026 in the so-called Kongu area this afternoon. In light of the incident, a hate campaign has started against him, with multiple social media posts blaming him for it. DMK, too, puts it squarely on the actor-politician and those who organised the rally. They claim that Vijay's late arrival contributed to an overcrowded situation, which contributed to the tragedy. Vijay, meanwhile, ended his speech and threw water bottles at the crowd for help.
Meanwhile, TN’s Additional Director General of Police, Law and Order, Davidson Devasirvatham has said that he is in contact with officials in Karur, investigating the incident.
