Director-actor Selvaraghavan is currently on a promotional spree for his upcoming film Aaryan, shared an update regarding the long-awaited sequels to his cult-classic films Aayirathil Oruvan (2010) and Pudhupettai (2006).

In an interview with Galatta Plus, Selvaraghavan said that making a sequel is a decision that cannot be taken suddenly. "I myself can't decide and get into production for the sake of it. We need to wait for a lot of people. What's the use when I alone take decisions?" While he confirmed that the writing for Pudhupettai 2 and Aayirathil Oruvan 2 is in process, Selvaraghavan underlined the importance of having a solid script in hand. "The script has to satisfy me. Both Dhanush and Karthi are not available for next three years at least. Since I left both films' ending with other characters, I can make these two films without Karthi and Dhanush also.," he shared.

Selvaraghavan: Filmmakers don't have the courage to bring authenticity to love and sex

Aayirathil Oruvan, headlined by Karthi was released to mostly mixed and negative reviews upon release, but became an audience-favourite cult-classic over time. Elsewhere in the same interview, he shared that the love the film is getting, is too late. "Aayirathil Oruvan getting praised in retrospect adds no value and does nothing to remove the criticisms it initially received. I actually feel that appreciating films years after they get released does no help. We invest in making the film with the hope of getting returns. It is of no use in appreciating the film now."

It is to be noted that a sequel to the film, also starring Reema Sen, Andrea Jeremiah and Parthiban, was announced in 2021 with a first look poster , confirming that it would star Dhanush. However, there has been no significant update about it after that and remains in development hell.

Pudhupettai too was among Selvaraghavan's critically-acclaimed films. The Dhanush-starrer also featured Sonia Agarwal and Sneha in supporting roles. It follows the story of a slum-dwelling student from Pudhupettai who rises to become a dreaded gangster in North Chennai.
