A day after crossing the Rs 200 crore milestone in India, Rajinikanth's Coolie, helmed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has witnessed a further dip in revenue. The action thriller earned Rs 9.5 crore on its sixth day, its steepest fall since it hit theatres. On its first Monday, Coolie dropped by a massive 65 per cent, minting just Rs 12 crore but managed to top the Rs 200 crore mark and crossed Rs 400 crore worldwide. The current total for Coolie stands at Rs 216 crore, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
Released on August 14, Coolie had earned a massive Rs 65 crore on its opening day in India and Rs 151 crore worldwide, breaking box office records to become the first Tamil film ever to achieve the feat. Coolie topped the list of top day 1 grossers in the Tamil film industry and surpassed Vijay's Leo which earned over Rs 140 crore on its first day.
On the reviews side, Coolie has been getting positive reactions for Rajinikanth's dominating screen presence, but was criticised for its disjointed story and screenplay featuring too many characters.
Meanwhile, Sun Pictures, which backed the film, has reportedly appealed to the Madras High Court for a U/A certificate for the film in place of the originally issued A certificate. This movie comes after several social media users questioned the reason behind CBFC's decision. The production banner's contention seems to stem from the fact that films with more violence, such as the KGF franchise, received U/A certificates from the Censor Board.
Coolie is the first Rajinikanth starrer in over three decades to receive an 'A' certificate from the Censor Board. If the appeal is approved, the film's revenue would get a big boost, as children and teenagers will be able to catch a glimpse of their star on screen.
Rajinikanth stars in his first collaboration with Lokesh Kanagaraj. The cast includes Nagarjuna, Upendra, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, and features cameos by Aamir Khan and Pooja Hegde. It tells the story of a former coolie looking to avenge the murder of his close friend.
The film, produced by Sun Pictures, has music composed by Anirudh, cinematography by Girish Gangadharan and editing by Philomin Raj.
