Just days after the release of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s film with Rajinikanth, Coolie, speculations are rife that Lokesh Kanagaraj is all set to unite Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth for a film, which will be his next directorial. Kaithi 2 was scheduled for Lokesh after he completed Coolie, but the plans may go for a shuffle now.
While an official announcement is awaited, reports suggest that Lokesh narrated a story to Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan prior to the release of Coolie. If reports are to be believed, RKFI and Sun Pictures are in talks to produce the film. Karthi has also, speculatively, been informed of the same, for which the actor has supposedly agreed to delay Kaithi 2. However, all of these are only speculated on social media, as an official announcement is yet to be made.
Prior to the release of Coolie, Lokesh Kanagaraj, in conversation with Gobinath, shared that years back, there was a plan for Rajinikanth to star and Kamal Haasan to produce the film. However, the pandemic disrupted the project before it could take off. Reflecting on the idea, Lokesh said he does not intend to push for it anymore. "While I may be in a position where I can initiate such a project, I don't want to. I already tried once, and it didn’t materialise. This is something that should happen naturally if the two legends decide to talk to each other for just 30 minutes,” he said.
He added that the two actors, who have shared a deep friendship for decades, remain in regular contact and are present for each other during significant moments. “I am nobody to initiate this. But if they decide to collaborate and call me, I will drop everything and go. The decision must come from them,” he said.

If Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan collaborate on this upcoming film, then they will be joining hands after 46 years. They last starred together in IV Sasi’s 1979 film, Alavuddinum Athbutha Vilakkum. While Kamal Haasan starred as Alavuddin, the protagonist, Rajinikanth played the antagonist, Kamaruddin. The film also starred Jayabharathi and Sripriya in prominent roles.
Kamal Haasan, last seen in Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life, currently has KH237 with Anbariv and Indian 3 in the pipeline. Rajinikanth, fresh from the release of Coolie, is filming for Nelson’s Jailer 2. Lokesh also has a superhero film with Aamir Khan besides Kaithi 2.
