Mohanlal has once again rewritten Malayalam cinema’s box office history, with Drishyam 3 crossing the Rs 150 crore mark worldwide within just five days of release. Written and directed by Jeethu Joseph, the crime thriller has emerged as another major commercial success for the veteran superstar despite receiving mixed reactions from a section of viewers.

According to the latest estimates reported by Indian box office tracker Sacnilk.com, Drishyam 3 has grossed approximately Rs 156.14 crore worldwide so far. The film has earned Rs 71.74 crore gross in India and Rs 84.40 crore overseas, while its net collection in India currently stands at Rs 61.80 crore.

The film collected Rs 8.51 crore gross on its first Monday, showing a steady hold despite the expected drop after the opening weekend. Sacnilk reports that the film witnessed around a 50 per cent drop from its opening-day figures and roughly 30 per cent from Friday’s numbers, which is considered a solid trend for a film with mixed reception.

One of the biggest highlights of Drishyam 3’s run has been its overseas performance. International markets have contributed more than 54 per cent of the total worldwide gross, once again underlining Mohanlal’s strong pull among the Malayalam diaspora audience across the globe.

With this, Mohanlal has become the only Malayalam actor to have three films in the Rs 150 crore club worldwide. Apart from Drishyam 3, his earlier releases Thudarum and L2: Empuraan had also crossed the milestone, with both films eventually entering the Rs 200 crore club.

Drishyam 3 has also climbed to the eighth position in the list of highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time worldwide within just five days of release. The film has now moved past Fahadh Faasil-Jithu Madhavan’s Aavesham and is closing in on Prithviraj Sukumaran-Blessy’s Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life).

Released on May 21, Drishyam 3 continues the story of Georgekutty (Mohanlal), following the events of the second instalment. While some viewers felt the third chapter does not recreate the shock value of the earlier films, audiences have largely appreciated Jeethu’s writing, emotional approach, and Mohanlal’s performance. The film also stars Meena, Ansiba Hassan, Esther Anil, Siddique, Murali Gopy and Asha Sharath in key roles.

Trade analysts expect the third instalment to comfortably cross Rs 200 crore during its second weekend if it maintains the current momentum at the box office.
