Dhurandhar, the Aditya Dhar directorial which smashed many box office records in its on-going box office run, also stirred a lot of debate with some of its storytelling choices. While the film largely received positive reviews from industry folks, there were celebrities like Hrithik Roshan who did point out their disagreements with the film’s politics. In a recent interview, eminent author Shobhaa De criticised Hrithik Roshan for his take.
Speaking to Rediff Originals, Shobhaa De said, “Nobody asked Hrithik Roshan whether he agreed with the politics of the film. He could have simply said he liked it — but he chose to go further. The choreography, the use of music, and the casting in Dhurandhar are all brilliant.”
At the same time, the author also said that it would be unfair motives to the film, while asserting that every film is political. She added, “Then came the political narrative — is this a right-wing financed film? Is Aditya Dhar recruiting people to his viewpoint? No filmmaker in the world is neutral or apolitical. Everything expressed in the public domain is political. To attribute motives like that is childish.”
Shobhaa De also spoke about how unprepared she was for the film, Shobhaa said, “Dhurandhar is like a political bomb. I wasn’t prepared for it. I went to watch it thinking it would be part of a spy universe. I mostly went because I had briefly run into Ranveer Singh at a cafe in Alibaug when he was preparing for the film. Further talking about Dhurandhar and praising Aditya Dhar for his work, she added, “The scale was massive. It also explored Lyari and the underworld of that era, drawing several parallels. From that perspective, I think it is very powerful filmmaking. I related to this more than Pathaan.”
Meanwhile, Dhurandhar makers are currently gearing up for release of the sequel, Dhurandhar: The Revenge. The much-anticipated film will arrive in theatres on March 19, clashing against another massive film Toxic.
