As anticipation builds around Avengers: Doomsday, actor Robert Downey Jr has assured fans that the upcoming Marvel spectacle is being designed to deliver in a way that avoids the post-Endgame slump many viewers associate with the franchise.
Downey, who famously portrayed Tony Stark/Iron Man across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is making a return to Marvel in an unexpected avatar, this time as Doctor Doom. The film is slated for a worldwide theatrical release in December.
Speaking in an interview with CBR alongside filmmaker Joe Russo, Downey said he believes the project has reached a stage where audiences will find the experience rewarding.
According to the actor, the film’s strength does not rest solely on his performance but on the larger creative framework built around it, including the narrative design and character dynamics. “There’s something going on in Doomsday and forward that is literally the only antidote to this: how do you not have these films be let down after an Infinity War and an Endgame?” Downey said, adding, “Boy, have we laboured long and hard to bring that down.”
Marvel Studios has had an uneven run since Avengers: Endgame became a global phenomenon in 2019. While releases including Spider-Man: No Way Home, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Deadpool & Wolverine connected strongly with audiences, several other titles struggled to recreate that momentum.
Joe Russo, who returns to direct after helming Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame with his brother Anthony Russo, hinted that Doomsday will take a different emotional approach from earlier entries.
Calling it the most emotionally layered chapter in the franchise so far, Russo said the film also feels more mature in tone than previous Avengers instalments and promised that audiences can expect surprises.
Downey also reflected on returning to the Marvel fold, saying gratitude has shaped the experience of working on the new films. “There’s an incredible amount of gratitude we have going into these two. One epic at a time. Doomsday... just the gratitude to be able to do it,” he said.
