Production on Mercenary: An Extraction Series has been wrapped, the makers of the Netflix show announced earlier this Thursday. The series hails from showrunner Glen Mazzara, known for The Walking Dead and The Shield, and stars Omar Sy of Lupin fame in the lead role. Featuring the Russo Brothers and AGBO as executive producers, the show is a spinoff of Netflix's own 2020 film Extraction, which starred Chris Hemsworth. It is the first show set in the world of Extraction. Besides Omar Sy, the eight-episode-long series stars Boyd Holbrook and Natalie Dormer as well.
Mercenary: An Extraction Series follows Omar Sy's mercenary, who embarks on a hostage rescue mission in Libya while dealing with his own mental health concerns. There are ruthless killers around him, in addition to warring factions, turning the mission into a do-or-die situation for the mercenary.
Also part of the cast are Ed Speleers, Ross McCall, Sacha Dhawan, Waleed Zuaiter, Sam Woolf, Pip Torrens, Michael Zananiri, Riyad Sliman, Aaron Heffernan, Theo Ogundipe, Muhannad Ben Amor, Jojo Macari, and Emma Appleton.
The shooting locations for the series include Morocco and Ireland.
Tim Southam of Foundation fame and Louise Hooper, known for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, have shared the direction duties, in addition to acting as executive producers on their episodes. Executive producers include Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, Chris Castaldi and Ari Costa of AGBO, along with Eric Gritter, Peter Schwerin, and Sam Hargrave. Alessandra Maman serves as one of the producers for AGBO.
This is not the only Extraction spinoff in development at Netflix. The streamer also has a Korean film, TYGO, starring Don Lee in the lead and directed by Lee Sang-yong, which is set in the Extraction universe. Notably, the film, an adaptation of the Russo brothers and Ande Parks' graphic novel, Ciudad, has also wrapped production.
