The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but fans do remember how to make Spidey a hero again. Five years after No Way Home's premiere, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has scripted a new history, especially in India with a whopping Rs 60.60 crore nett opening across 17,250 shows. The superhero film's gross collections surpassed Rs 70 crore mark by minting Rs 73.96 crore.
Tom Holland is also launching his strong webs across languages in the country as the Hindi version has given a tough competition to the English original by earning Rs 22 crore. Rs 32.25 crore came from the English screenings. Tamil and Telugu languages have also collected over Rs 3 crore each on day 1.
The numbers are almost double of what No Way Home opened in 2021. For the unversed, Spider-Man: No Way Home had collected Rs 32.67 crore at the Indian box office. The film is also turning out to be Holland's career best as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which also starred him as Odysseus' son Telemachus, only earned Rs 20.76 crore in gross collections in India, establishing Spidey's sustained popularity among audiences in the country. Interestingly, Brand New Day's day 1 collections have also surpassed the mighty Avengers: Endgame opening day revenue.
The English 3D version for Brand New Day witnessed a notable rise in audience turnout as the day progressed. After recording a steady occupancy of 51.22 per cent during the morning and afternoon shows, evening screenings jumped to 58.78 per cent, reflecting strong interest from urban moviegoers opting for premium-format experiences after work. Overall, the film registered an impressive daily occupancy of 53.74 per cent across all tracked shows, showcasing its sustained box office momentum.
As reported earlier, Spider-Man: Brand New Day begins on the heels of the previous film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which ended with Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) casting a spell over the world, to make everyone forget Peter Parker (Tom Holland), in order to protect his identity as Spider-Man. This includes his close friends MJ and Ned (Zendaya and Jacob Batalon). Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film is his second MCU project after Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The cast also features Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Florence Pugh, Tramell Tillman, Marisa Tomei, and Mark Ruffalo.
Critics have largely praised the film for its emotionally grounded storytelling, striking a balance between Peter Parker's personal struggles and spectacular visual effects. Although a few reviewers felt the first half unfolds at a measured pace, Tom Holland and Sadie Sink's performances have received widespread appreciation, while the action-packed climax has emerged as one of the film's biggest highlights.
An excerpt from our CE review of the film reads, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day takes us on a focused, visually pleasing journey of Peter Parker’s meditation on harsh truths and acceptance while Spider-Man uses that wisdom to be the friendly neighbourhood superhero we know and love."
Meanwhile, film is projected to make a phenomenal global debut, with its opening weekend expected to earn between $465 million and $470 million worldwide. In China, the film has generated tremendous buzz, with opening-day collections tracking at over $35 million, setting new records in the market. Meanwhile, in North America, the superhero blockbuster is forecast to deliver a massive domestic opening weekend, with estimates ranging from $195 million to $300 million.
