Thanks to Christopher Nolan's massive fanbase in India, built through his critically acclaimed films, his latest venture The Odyssey has also opened with massive numbers in India. According to Sacnilk, the epic film has achieved worldwide collections of Rs 20.76 crore in gross collections and Rs 17.40 crore in net collections across 8,413 shows.
The film, which is the first feature film to be entirely shot with IMAX cameras, recorded an overall 48.7 per cent occupancy in theatres on its opening day. Although The Odyssey released in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, the film witnessed its strongest response in the original English version which contributed to approximately Rs 13.75 crore nett.
While The Odyssey's opening day numbers are higher than Nolan's previous biographical thriller film Oppenheimer (2023) (which earned Rs 13.50 crore net (roughly Rs 16 crore gross) across India on day 1), it did not surpass popular films like Avatar: Fire and Ash and Deadpool & Wolverine. It earned Rs 18 crore and Rs 21 crore respectively on their first day in India.
However, The Odyssey's numbers are expected to pick up massively over the next two days with the opening day numbers being a strong indicator of the film's blockbuster opening weekend.
For the unversed, the film is based on Greek king Odysseus' (Matt Damon) long and ardous 10-year-long journey after the Trojan war to reunite with his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland). It has been earning rave reviews across the world for its stunning cinematography and engaging screenplay.
In our CE review of the film, we had written, "Odysseus’ journey plays out like a video game with various levels, each with a final boss of sorts. These levels are emotionally stirring and deal with various themes that question the concept of war and ask if it has all been worth it. But there are times when these feel like extended set pieces, making you aware that The Odyssey is an almost 3-hour film."
The star-studded cast also features Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, Rafi Gavron, Shiloh Fernandez, Mia Goth, among others. Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas have produced the film through their production company, Syncopy.
