After completing The Odyssey, filmmaker Christopher Nolan has indicated that audiences may have to wait a while before his next directorial venture. The Oscar-winning director has said he intends to take a break from directing for at least three years, admitting that the scale of his latest film left both him and his team physically exhausted.
In an interview with Today, Nolan reflected on the demanding nature of the production, saying the experience tested everyone's endurance. "I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody's stamina, I think," he said, looking back on the months-long shoot.
Despite the challenges, Nolan suggested that the hardship felt appropriate for a film based on Homer's legendary epic. He remarked that a project of The Odyssey's magnitude was never expected to be easy, adding, "We're not doing the job right, making a film of The Odyssey if it doesn't seem difficult."
The filmmaker also spoke about the technical ambitions behind the project, which became the first commercial feature to be filmed entirely using IMAX cameras. Given the cameras' size and operational complexity, the crew had to devise new filmmaking techniques to execute several sequences while maintaining Nolan's vision.
Recalling his conversations with the IMAX team, Nolan said he felt this was the ideal project to finally realise the long-held ambition of shooting an entire feature in the format, considering the scale and spectacle the story demanded.
Based on Homer's classic poem, The Odyssey follows King Odysseus' perilous journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Matt Damon stars in the lead role, with Anne Hathaway playing Penelope and Tom Holland portraying Telemachus. The cast also features Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong'o, among others.
Released in theatres on July 17, The Odyssey also marked Nolan's visit to India, where he attended the film's Mumbai premiere alongside Matt Damon, Tom Holland and producer Emma Thomas. The team participated in screenings and promotional events during their two-day visit.
