The Odyssey box office: July has given Hollywood a massive revival at the box office with two films, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey and Marvel's Spider-Man: Brand New Day. With the latter already surpassing the $1 billion mark two days ago, the former, headlined by Matt Damon, is inching towards joining the billion-dollar club.
The Odyssey, which stands at $932 million at present, will have a unique milestone when it reaches the $1 billion mark. The film, R-rated, will become the third with the rating to surpass $1 billion dollars.
Interestingly, Nolan is set to surpass his own record to make it third in the list. At number 1, we have Deadpool and Wolverine, with a collection of $1.338 billion. Next is Joker, $1.079 billion. While The Odyssey is in the fourth place, the third place is now occupied by Nolan's own Oppenheimer, at $976.97 million.
The Odyssey is adapted from Homer's eponymous ancient poem. It is based on Greek king Odysseus' (Matt Damon) long and arduous 10-year-long journey after the Trojan War to reunite with his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), and son, Telemachus (Tom Holland).
An excerpt from CE's review of The Odyssey reads, "There is a wonderful contrast in how Nolan treats the scenes featuring Odysseus after the Trojan War and those involving Penelope (an outstanding Anne Hathaway), Telemachus (an assured Tom Holland), and Antinous (A sinisterly good Robert Pattinson). Through cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema’s brilliant work, Nolan frames Odysseus as one with nature, allowing the audience to see the vastness of a journey that takes him through mountains, oceans, whirlpools, torrential rains, caverns, and actual hell in Hades."
The star-studded cast also features Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, Rafi Gavron, Shiloh Fernandez, Mia Goth, among others. The film is currently playing in theatres.
