Jamie Lee Curtis is getting candid about everything from reuniting with Lindsay Lohan for Freakier Friday to her latest Emmy nomination. In an interview to Variety at the Las Culturistas Culture Awards in Los Angeles, the Oscar winner reflected on what’s shaping up to be an eventful summer.
Curtis couldn’t contain her excitement about working with Lohan again on the sequel to Freaky Friday, calling the experience “a joy.” “She has taught me so much,” Curtis shared. “She has her team, where her two people would be standing on either side of a camera holding a big light. It’s Lindsay lighting—that would have been good branding—they hold lights so that we look better. So, I’ve learned a lot from her already. We had a good time. We love each other.”
The upcoming film, Freakier Friday, puts a multigenerational spin on the beloved body-swap comedy, this time with Lohan’s character Anna as a mother herself. “It’s a movie for today,” Curtis said. “It is a happy, nostalgic, funny, sweet, heartfelt Disney movie right at the end of the summer. There haven’t been a lot of movies for women, and this is a love letter to every mother, grandma, sister, cousin, and daughter.”
The sequel features many returning faces, including Chad Michael Murray, Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. New additions to the cast include Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Sophia Hammons, and Julia Butters. Directed by Nisha Ganatra, the film is written by Dollface creator Jordan Weiss. Curtis and Lohan are also on board as executive producers, with Andrew Gunn and Kristin Burr producing. Freakier Friday is set to hit theatres on August 8.
Curtis, who recently earned her second Emmy nomination for her guest role as Donna in FX’s The Bear, admitted she’s still in disbelief. “I can’t believe it,” she said. “It’s just beautiful. It’s a beautiful show and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I was a fan from the beginning—I just love the stories they tell and the characters they create.” However, when asked if Donna could get a spinoff, Curtis quickly shut down the idea: “Never, never.”
Last seen in The Last Showgirl, Curtis also has Paul Greengrass' The Last Bus and James L Brooks' Ella McCay coming up.
