James Gunn is making it clear that Amanda Waller hasn’t been forgotten in the DCU shuffle. The Superman director confirmed that he and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran are still developing the Viola Davis-led series centred on the morally grey Task Force X leader.
“We’re working on it, so we’ll see what happens,” Gunn told People. “Some things have moved faster than others. Waller’s not been the fastest. But I can’t wait to see Viola put on their Waller pants again.”
First announced in 2022 with Watchmen writer Christal Henry attached as writer and executive producer alongside Davis, the show was later joined by Doom Patrol creator Jeremy Carver as co-writer. Unlike the comedic Peacemaker, Waller is set to lean more into drama.
Davis first stepped into the role of Amanda Waller in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016) and reprised the character in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (2021), as well as the first season of Peacemaker.
Gunn acknowledged that the project has been a challenge to crack. “We’ve taken a couple of cracks at Waller, and we haven’t been able to land it,” Safran admitted earlier this year. Gunn added, “Waller has been tough; the strike was tough on Waller. There was a certain amount of time that we needed to do Peacemaker first.”
Originally, the plan was to roll out Waller before Peacemaker Season 2. But as Gunn explained, “We were going to go with Waller before Peacemaker, but I wrote Peacemaker quickly, and we were ready to go.”
While Waller is still in development, Gunn and Safran are also pushing forward with Lanterns, another Max spinoff expected to arrive in early 2026.
