Speaking to People, he said, "I just came back. It was amazing. It was actually really… in a sort of ooey, gooey way, it was really healing and really nice to go back to something that was a terrible experience when I did it the first time. A great film, a great film. I love the film.”

Rebecca Romijn on returning as Mystique for Avengers: Doomsday: 'It was surreal…'

Cumming has previously opened up in detail about the issues he had while filming for X2, helmed by the infamous Bryan Singer. He said that the experience was "miserable and awful for a variety of reasons that I have talked about at length. However, the second time around, the actor not only had a better experience but perhaps one of the best.

He was pleasantly surprised and positively challenged to do action sequences at the age of 60. "It was actually really great to go back. I’m 60 years old. I did not think I would be doing stunts, playing a superhero in my 60s. So that was great. And everyone was really nice." He added that he had to complete the shoot quickly because of his shoot for The Traitors.

From the X-Men universe, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, James Marsden and Rebecca Romijn are also reprising their roles in Avengers: Doomsday, along with Cumming. From the MCU front, Robert Downey Jr, Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright and Winston Duke are making a return, with Downey Jr playing Dr Doom.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theatres on December 18, 2026. It will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
