Rob Lowe is in Los Angeles to headline and produce a new independent feature, The Musical. He stars alongside Gillian Jacobs and Tony Award winner Will Brill under the direction of Giselle Bonilla, working from a script by Alexander Heller. Shooting is currently underway in LA.
The Musical puts Will Brill in the shoes of an embittered playwright and middle school theatre instructor whose world is upended when his ex-girlfriend (Jacobs) gets romantically involved with his long-time rival, the school principal portrayed by Lowe. The rivalry escalates as Brill’s character devises an outrageous scheme to sabotage the principal’s shot at academic glory: assembling the most inappropriate school musical imaginable. The dark comedy explores the tangled motivations of love, jealousy, ambition, and artistic pretension.
The film marks a reunion for director Bonilla and writer Heller; both are American Film Institute alumni who first collaborated on a short film version of The Musical. This new feature unites producers Lowe, Heller, Greg Lauritano, Jordan Backhus, and Findlay Brown. The executive producer lineup includes Jonathan Levine, Gillian Bohrer, Chris Quintos Cathcart, Tyler Boehm, and Vince Jolivette, with David Duque-Estrada co-producing.
Beyond this project, Lowe continues to host and produce Fox’s top-rated game show The Floor, recently renewed through season five, and he’ll next be seen in Bleecker Street’s horror-thriller The Third Parent with Crispin Glover. His recent credits include 9-1-1: Lone Star and the comedy Unstable, where he starred opposite his son John Owen Lowe.
Will Brill, fresh off his Tony-winning run in Broadway’s record-breaking play Stereophonic, has appeared on Showtime’s acclaimed Fellow Travelers and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. He’s set for roles in Caught Stealing with Austin Butler, The Whisper Man with Robert DeNiro and Michelle Monaghan, and Sian Heder’s next feature, Being Heumann.
Gillian Jacobs is currently on Hulu’s acclaimed series The Bear and voices Atom Eve in Amazon’s popular animated hit Invincible. She’s recognised for her roles on Netflix’s Love, the fan-favourite comedy Community, and appearances in Girls, Winning Time, and more.
