A shake-up has taken place behind the scenes of Will Ferrell’s upcoming Netflix golf comedy, with Ramy Youssef, Josh Rabinowitz, and Andy Campagna all exiting as executive producers due to creative differences. This leadership transition reportedly happened last year, though Youssef and Rabinowitz were initially set to co-showrun the project, having co-created the series alongside Ferrell, who stars as a legendary fictional golfer.
Andy Campagna was executive producing for Cairo Cowboy, Youssef’s production banner. Cairo Cowboy, however, is maintaining its relationship with Netflix, particularly with an untitled living facility show in development with Steve Way, one of Youssef’s long-time collaborators and friends.
Although a fictional story, the comedy series may take inspiration from the controversial LIV Golf startup. The series marks Ferrell's first comedy series. Ferrell is also an avid golfer who has hosted a fundraising event benefiting Cancer for College for two decades called The Will Powered Classic.
Meanwhile, the project has just added Molly Shannon to its cast in the role of Stacy. Her casting marks a reunion with Ferrell—both were Saturday Night Live castmates between 1995 and 2001. Shannon’s recent TV credits include Season 4 of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, the full run of The Other Two on HBO Max, Showtime’s I Love That for You, and HBO’s The White Lotus, Enlightened, and Divorce. She’s also appeared in NBC’s Will & Grace revival and Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer miniseries.
Looking ahead, Shannon will star in two upcoming films: the teen road trip comedy Driver’s Ed and the Netflix adaptation of Emily Henry’s People We Meet on Vacation.
The golf comedy is executive produced by Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum and Alix Taylor for Gloria Sanchez Productions; Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman and Nena Rodrigue for T-Street; as well as Chris Hench, Harper Steele, David Gordon Green and Andrew Guest.
