The film, penned as a spec script by Workin’ Moms writer Daniel Gold, follows two fed-up underworld foot soldiers who decide they’ve had enough of being “disposable.” Ditching their ruthless boss and going off the grid, they find themselves on the run from an elite assassin, rewriting the rules of survival as they go.

Ryan Gosling reportedly fell in love with the script and played a key role in bringing Will Ferrell onboard. Both stars are in talks to headline and produce the project, which is still in early development.

Production for Tough Guys is expected to be steered by Gosling and Jessie Henderson under their General Admission banner, with Ferrell producing alongside Jessica Elbaum for Gloria Sanchez. Trevor Engelson and Aaron Folbe of Underground are attached as executive producers.

Gosling, an Oscar nominee and recent action-comedy standout in The Fall Guy, continues to strengthen his relationship with Amazon MGM Studios. The studio is set to release his upcoming sci-fi tentpole Project Hail Mary on March 20, 2026. Helmed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film also stars Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Lionel Boyce, and Ken Leung. With a screenplay by Drew Goddard, the film is based on the 2021 novel of the same name by Andy Weir.

Ferrell is no stranger to the studio either as he recently headlined You’re Cordially Invited and is currently working on a Nicholas Stoller-directed comedy for Amazon MGM Studios. The upcoming film is titled Judgement Day. In the comedy, he stars alongside Zac Efron, Regina Hall, Jimmy Tatro, Billy Eichner, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Michael Peña, Bobby Cannavale, Fortune Feimster, and Bill Camp.
