Speculation around actor Alia Bhatt joining the cast of Nag Ashwin’s upcoming sequel to Kalki 2898 AD picked up pace on social media on Tuesday, leaving fans divided over whether she was being considered as Deepika Padukone’s replacement or for a completely new character.
The rumours gained traction after several entertainment pages claimed that Alia had not only signed on for the project but had also completed portions of filming in Hyderabad. While some reports suggested she could take over the role of Sumathi (SUM-80), others indicated that she had been brought in for an entirely new part.
However, according to a report in Hindustan Times, there is currently no confirmation regarding either claim. The publication reported that a representative associated with the film denied rumours that Alia had already filmed scenes for the sequel. The report further stated that there is no official clarity yet on whether the actor has been cast and suggested that the speculation appears to have originated from social media posts that were widely circulated as news.
Neither Alia Bhatt nor the makers of Kalki 2898 AD have issued an official statement on the matter. The latest round of rumours comes months after Deepika Padukone’s exit from the franchise was made official. In September 2025, production banner Vyjayanthi Movies announced that the actor would not return for the sequel, saying both parties had mutually decided to part ways despite collaborating on the first film.
Earlier this year, speculation had also linked Sai Pallavi to the project, with reports claiming she was being considered for the role of SUM-80. However, at the time, sources maintained that discussions had not reached a final stage and urged audiences to wait for official confirmation.
Meanwhile, work on the sequel is progressing, with Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan reportedly resuming shooting schedules. Prabhas is yet to join the production.
