Senior actor Jayasudha shared her memories of legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja, who passed away earlier this Wednesday. She worked with him as the female lead in the 1996 film Anthimanthaarai and remembered him as one of the greatest directors Indian cinema has ever produced.

“I knew Bharathiraja garu even before Anthimanthaarai, as he worked as a co-director on a few films in which I acted. He was a great filmmaker who beautifully portrayed rural India on screen. He was among the pioneers who brought village life and its emotions to the forefront of Indian cinema,” said Jayasudha.

The actress said Bharathiraja’s films gave urban audiences a deep understanding and appreciation of rural life. “I was born and brought up in a city and had very little exposure to village life. But after watching his films, I developed a great admiration for the beauty, simplicity, and emotions of rural India. His phenomenal contribution to Indian cinema is truly unforgettable,” she said.

Jayasudha added that Bharathiraja changed the trend of filmmaking with his unique storytelling and realistic narratives. She also spoke about the iconic combination of Bharathiraja and music maestro Ilaiyaraaja.

“The Bharathiraja–Ilaiyaraaja combination delivered many memorable films. Personally, I feel Ilaiyaraaja’s music reached even greater heights because of Bharathiraja’s films and the way he presented songs and emotions on screen,” she said.

Recalling his impact on South Indian cinema, Jayasudha said Bharathiraja inspired generations of filmmakers.

“After Bharathiraja, several acclaimed South Indian directors such as K Raghavendra Rao, Dasari Narayana Rao, K Viswanath, and Bapu made their mark. But Bharathiraja’s filmmaking style and creativity were unique and impossible to replicate,” she said.

Talking about his personality on the sets, Jayasudha described him as a warm and cheerful person. “He was always smiling. The way he communicated with technicians and interacted with actors made everyone feel comfortable. He never displayed anger or frustration and never created a negative atmosphere on the sets. He always carried a positive energy around him,” she recalled.

Jayasudha said it is impossible to describe Bharathiraja’s greatness in just a few words. “I cannot speak about him in a few sentences; I can write an entire book about him. His contribution to Indian cinema and the way he portrayed rural life on screen are unmatched. The romance, music, relationships, and emotions in his films had a unique touch that only he could bring,” she said.

Paying tribute to the legendary filmmaker, Jayasudha said Indian cinema has lost a visionary director. “We have lost a legendary filmmaker who changed cinema through his creativity and vision. We will continue to remember him through his timeless films. He deserves every honour and recognition for his immense contribution to Indian cinema,” said Jayasudha.
