The upcoming thriller Karmakhya, starring Samuthirakani, Abhirami, Anand, Samaira, and Saranya Pradeep, is all set to hit theatres on July 31. Speaking at the trailer launch event, director Abhinaya Krishna explained why the film's title was changed from Kamakhya to Karmakhya.
"Initially, we had finalised the title Kamakhya, but due to unavoidable reasons we had to change it. We had already completed a lot of promotions with the original title, so I even uploaded a video on social media asking people to suggest a new title. We received many interesting suggestions, and finally chose Karmakhya, which is very close to the original title," said the director.
Clarifying the film's genre, Abhinaya Krishna said Karmakhya is a crime thriller with a divine element and not a devotional film. "This is a crime thriller with a divine element associated with the Goddess. It is not a devotional film," he said.
The director grabbed everyone's attention with a bold statement about the film's success. "If this film doesn't get a hit talk, I will shave my head. I'm not saying this out of overconfidence. I have complete faith in my subject and in the hard work I've put into making this film. If I'm wrong, I'll consider shaving my head as the punishment I give myself," he said.
Abhinaya Krishna also said he would gladly share the credit if the film succeeds but would take full responsibility if it fails. "If the film becomes a success, the credit belongs to the entire team. But if it fails, I alone will take responsibility because everyone worked according to my vision and direction," he said.
The director added that changing a film's title is not unusual and hoped it would bring good fortune. "Many successful films have changed their titles before release. I'm taking it positively and hope Karmakhya follows the same path," he said.
He also thanked his entire team for their dedication. "I would like to thank every member of my team for their hard work. Every character in this film has an important role to play. My debut film, which was released on OTT, won me the Best Director award. If this film also wins an award, I'll be very happy. Even if I don't receive one personally, I'll be equally happy if anyone from my team is honoured," he added.
Veteran actress and National Award winner Vijayashanthi attended the event as the chief guest. Abhinaya Krishna thanked her for gracing the occasion and recalled that he had watched her iconic film Karthavyam countless times.
Vijayashanthi, in turn, expressed confidence that the film would become a success and urged the director not to worry about his promise. "Abhinaya Krishna doesn't have to shave his head because this film will definitely become a hit. Though the title has changed to Karmakhya, it still carries the Goddess's name, and I strongly believe the film will be successful," she said.
She also stressed the importance of supporting small films. "These days, filmmakers are coming up with excellent subjects. Small films have strong content and great potential. We too reached this stage by working in small films. I request the media and audiences to support and encourage good small films with meaningful content," Vijayashanthi added.
