New technology has become an integral part of filmmaking, with many filmmakers experimenting with AI, advanced visual effects and other technical innovations. Now, filmmaker Ramesh Varma is coming up with a new experiment in Indian cinema with a hybrid live-action format. He has joined hands with prestigious banners Pen Movies and Sri Neeladri Productions, in association with RV Studios, for Mahaveer Karna, a mythological film based on the legendary character Karna from the Mahabharata.

Announcing the new project, the makers said that the film promises to take Indian cinema into extraordinary new visual territory. Presented by Jayantilal Gada, the film is scheduled to hit the screens on December 4, 2026, across India.

Having explored action, thriller and commercial cinema in his earlier films, Ramesh Varma is now venturing into an entirely new space with the timeless story of Karna. With Mahaveer Karna, the filmmaker is experimenting with a hybrid live-action format that brings together the emotional power of live performance and the limitless possibilities of advanced visual effects.

The makers believe that the experiment becomes particularly exciting because of the choice of Karna as the emotional centre of the story. Karna’s story is not simply that of a warrior seeking glory; it is the story of a man for whom his word stood above everything else. Born to Kunti but raised away from royal recognition, Karna spends his life confronting rejection, identity and fate, yet remains fiercely loyal to the people and principles he chooses.

His commitment to his promises and his legendary generosity reveal a man who would rather face the consequences of his word than break it. This uncompromising quality makes Karna one of the most fascinating and tragic figures in the Mahabharata, and it is this powerful dimension that forms the emotional foundation of Mahaveer Karna.

The makers have also unveiled a teaser along with the poster, immediately showcasing the defining qualities of Karna. The visual treatment suggests that the film is not being approached merely as a mythological spectacle, but as a deeply human epic about honour, loyalty, friendship, betrayal, destiny and the price of keeping one’s word.

The hybrid live-action approach further amplifies this vision, giving Ramesh Varma an opportunity to experiment with scale, imagery and cinematic world-building in a manner rarely attempted in Indian cinema.

The creative and technical team includes Hybrid Creator Ramji Dott as the cinematographer, Prawin Pudi as the editor, lyricist Shreemani as the dialogue writer and Gyaani as the music director. Mahaveer Karna is set to have a grand pan-India theatrical release on December 4, 2026.
