Vishnu Manchu, the lead actor of Kannappa, had announced that the team would not go for the standard 4 week theatrical window, and would for atleast 10 weeks before releasing their film for streaming. On Monday, the team finally announced the OTT premiere details of their film, Kannappa, which will begin streaming on Prime Video on September 4.
“Witness the epic, spirit of sacrifice & divinity. Kannappa releases digitally on Sept 4, 2025 only on Prime Video,” Vishnu posted on his X page. Directed by Mukesh S Singh, Kannappa told the mythological story of Thinnadu (Vishnu Manchu), an atheist in the second century who despises the rituals of his tribes and rebels against the norms, but evolves into the devour Kannappa after a brief encounter with the divine.
Produced by Mohan Babu in association with 24 Frames Factory, the fantasy drama also starred Akshay Kumar, Prabhas, Kajal Aggarwal, Madhoo, Mohanlal, and Preity Mukundhan among many others in the ensemble cast.
Reportedly made on a massive budget of Rs 200 crore, the film managed to gross Rs 42 crore at the box office worldwide, and hence largely depends on its OTT deals to recover its costs. In our review for Kannappa, we noted, “Ultimately, Kannappa is less about Shiva and more about the makers trying very hard to mount a legacy project. There’s ambition here, no doubt. But ambition without clarity is vanity.”
