On Sunday evening, producer and exhibitor Suneil Narang resigned from the position of President of the Telangana Film Chamber of Commerce (TFCC), just a day after being elected for a third consecutive term.
In his resignation letter addressed to the Executive Committee, Narang stated, “I regret to inform you that I am stepping down from the position, as my name was forcefully associated with public statements which were in no way connected to me.” He added that he had not been consulted ahead of the press conference and could not take responsibility for remarks made without his consent.
The development comes in the wake of a press meet held on June 7, during which newly elected General Secretary VL Sreedhar made a few controversial comments regarding the ongoing Telugu theatre revenue-sharing dispute.
Reports suggest that Sreedhar accused unnamed producers and directors of misguiding actor and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and criticised a young actor getting paid Rs 13 crore despite a heavily underperforming film. Narang, seated beside him, was reportedly seen trying to distance himself from the statements.
Sources indicate that backlash from sections of the industry prompted Narang’s decision, as concerns arose that his presence at the event might imply endorsement of the remarks.
Narang, a prominent figure in the Nizam distribution circuit and co-owner of Asian Cinemas, has backed several films, including Love Story and Dacoit. His resignation is being interpreted as a move to protect his industry relationships and maintain neutrality amidst an ongoing divide over theatrical revenues and OTT influence.
Narang is awaiting his next release of the Dhanush and Nagarjuna starrer Kuberaa, coming out on June 20.
