The much-awaited sequel to Karthi's Sardar finally hit theatres on Thursday. With SJ Suryah, Malavika Mohanan and Ashika Ranganath joining the cast this time, Sardar 2 sees PS Mithran return to the director's chair.
The film brings back Karthi in his dual roles as Indian spy Chandra Bose, aka Sardar, and his son, police officer Vijay Prakash, while expanding the franchise with S J Suryah as the antagonist Black Dagger. Rajisha Vijayan also returns from the first film.
While the film's first show in Chennai is coming to an end, audiences have already started sharing their opinion about the sequel. With the international premiere set a little in advance compared to the Indian premiere, some reviews have already been published on X by overseas movie buffs.
So far, Sardar 2 has been receiving mixed reviews, with appreciation for Karthi's performance and PS Mithran's writing. However, there are also criticisms against the screenplay, with some saying the film's messaging overpowers entertainment. Many have also criticised the background score for the film.

Another user said the film is a must-watch. "This second chapter is really worth watching. Karthi did outperform is own self from the first part. Yogi babu - Nizhalgal ravi combo stands out. Malavika mohanan was great. P.S Mithran delivered a solid harsh reality without even trying hard. Must watch," the review read.
Detailing why the film is run of the mill, one user penned, "Again message stands over movie! Has a neat emotional hook btw hero & villain but apart writing is very routine/convinently done missing on the intended race against time conflict feeling stretched & loud."
One review compared the sequel to Sardar. "It went on the same tempo as the first part. Dove deeper into what it means to be once a spy—always a spy with its conclusion; really liked it. Though in the second half the actually message is expressed multiple times with multiple characters that it got preachy," it read.
