Soori-starrer Mandaadi, which has emerged as the biggest commercial success of the actor’s career as a lead, is set to make its way to the digital space after a successful theatrical run. Directed by Mathimaran Pugazhendhi, the film has been one of the notable Tamil hits of the year, with its rooted setting, action sequences and boat-racing portions drawing considerable attention from audiences.
Mandaadi revolves around a traditional sailboat race practised along the Tamil Nadu coastline. Soori plays Muthukaali, a skilled boat racer whose life takes a different turn before circumstances bring him back to the sport. Suhas plays a key role in the film as his rival, with the narrative built around the rivalry between two teams and the stakes surrounding the annual race. The film also stars Mahima Nambiar, Sathyaraj, Mithun Jai Sankar, Ravindra Vijay, Bala Saravanan and Stun Siva, among others.
Now, after completing a strong theatrical run, Mandaadi will be available to stream on Netflix from October 8. The film’s OTT premiere comes at a time when it continues to celebrate major box-office milestones. The film’s theatrical success reached another milestone on Monday, with the makers announcing that Mandaadi has crossed Rs 100 crore in India and Rs 150 crore worldwide. The film had emerged as the highest-grossing film of Soori’s career in a lead role even before reaching these latest figures.
The film’s success has also earned appreciation from several members of the film fraternity. Director Vetrimaaran, who worked with Soori in the Viduthalai films and played an important role in the actor’s transition to leading roles, praised the dedication behind Mandaadi. Kamal Haasan also met the team following a special screening and appreciated the film, particularly its writing and dialogues. Soori later described his meeting with Kamal as one of the most unforgettable moments of his life. Rajinikanth was among those who praised the team.
Produced by Elred Kumar under the RS Infotainment banner, Mandaadi has music by GV Prakash Kumar, cinematography by SR Kathir and editing by Pradeep E Ragav. The makers had also mounted the sailing sequences on a considerable scale, with stunt choreographers Peter Hein, Dhilip Subbarayan and Mahesh Mathew involved in the action portions.
