After receiving mixed reviews and some criticism for his 2023 film Maamannan, Mari Selvaraj delivered back-to-back hits and critically acclaimed works in Vaazhai (2024) and Bison Kaalamaadan (2025). Following the release of the 2024 film, Mari said that he would bring back its Sivanaindhan (Ponvel) character with one more "powerful" story and confirmed his plan to do another Vaazhai film.
Earlier this Sunday, the filmmaker took to social media and revealed that his sixth film would be announced at 10 am on June 01, Monday. He also dropped a poster featuring a child in the middle of a field with a piece of text that reads, "A new journey begins tomorrow at 10 AM."
The filmmaker tagged producer and his spouse, Divya Mariselvaraj, and their production banner Navvi Studios in his latest post, in addition to Think Music, thus strongly suggesting that it pertains to a continuation of the story.
It is worth noting that producer Divya served as a producer on Vaazhai under the banner of Navvi Studios and that Think Music has the audio rights of the 2024 film.
For the unversed, Vaazhai tells the story of two school children Sivanaindhan and Sekar (Raghul) and their struggles growing up an underprivileged family. The 2024 film also stars Kalaiyarasan, Nikhila Vimal, J Sathish Kumar, Dhivya Duraisamy, and Janaki, among others. Inspired by Mari Selvaraj's own childhood and made on a modest budget, it went on to gross around 40 crore from theatres worldwide, according to data from Sacnilk.
It remains to seen which of the Vaazhai cast members will be part of the upcoming film. Further, one wonders what the announcement will mean for the Dhanush-Mari Selvaraj film.
