Scriptwriter-turned-director Rathna Kumar is currently on a promotional spree for his latest film 29, starring Vidhu and Preethi Asrani in lead roles. A longtime collaborator with Lokesh Kanagaraj, he is also penning the script for Karthi and PS Mithran's upcoming film Sardar 2. Sharing a few details on the much-anticipated spy action thriller film, Rathna Kumar revealed that the film will serve both a sequel and a prequel to the first film, released in 2022 that went on to earn critical and commercial acclaim.
"The film has a very interesting set-up where Sardar’s portions take place in the flashback, while Inspector Vijay’s portions happen in the present. It is both a prequel and a sequel.. The flashback portions will be very exciting and will showcase Sardar’s origin story along with his rookie phase. It has come out very well," he shared in a recent conversation.
Elsewhere in the interview, he stated that they avoided writing a typical "white-collar criminal" as their villain. "That was our thumb rule. So, you will see a different dimension of SJ Suryah in this role," he said.
Sardar 2 also stars SJ Suryah, Ashika Ranganath, Yogi Babu, and Rajisha Vijayan in pivotal roles. Rajisha also appears in the first Sardar film, alongside Raashii Khanna, Chunky Pandey, Laila, Rithvik, Munishkanth, Avinash, Yugi Sethu, and Balaji Sakthivel.
In an earlier three-minute-long prologue released by the makers, it was established that Karthi's Sardar will have a major role in the sequel. He, along with his son (also played by the actor), are set to go head-on against SJ Suryah's character named as the 'Black Dagger'. The makers are yet to reveal full plot details and a release date for Sardar 2.
Sam CS is composing the music for the Sardar sequel, while George C Williams handles cinematography and Vijay Velukutty manages editing. Besides Rathna Kumar, Ashameera Aiyappan, and Vignesh Muniyandi are also part of the writing team. S Lakshman Kumar produces Sardar 2 under his Prince Pictures banner, alongside Ishan Saksena.
A release date for the film is yet to be announced.
