Sun TV Network Limited, the parent company of Sun Pictures, has filed a lawsuit at the Madras High Court, moving the owners of the Chennai side of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), for copyright infringement. The suit has been filed against the alleged use of songs from Coolie, Jailer, and Jailer 2, without obtaining liscence, reported Bar and Bench.

In the commericial copyright infringement suit filed, Sun TV has named CEO and Managing Director Kasi Viswanathan, Head of Finance Avinash Sridharan and Head of Content Radhakrishnan Sreenivasan as the defendants. The suit alleges that the cricket franchise had used dialogues, background music, and content from soundtracks, from the films, for which the exclusive rights remains with the network, even though Anirudh has composed the music.

As part of the suit filed, Sun TV seeks to restrain CSK against usage of any material, such as dialogues, music or background music, permenantly. Sun TV has further sought Rs 1 crore in damages and for CSK to disclose the revenue generated from the content which contains the copyrighted content.

The matter, for which preliminary submissions was heard by Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy, is due to have a hearing on March 16.

Coolie was directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and was released on August 15, 2025. The film starring Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Upendra, Sathyaraj, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, and others, was released on the eve of Rajinikanth's completion of 50 years in the industry.

Jailer (2023) was directed by Nelson, also starring Rajinikanth, Ramya Krishnan, Shivarajkumar, Vinayakan, and Vijay Vasanth, among others. A sequel for the film also directed by Nelson, is in the works.
