Director Karthik Subbaraj has once again fuelled hopes of a collaboration with actor Ajith Kumar. Responding to a fan during a recent appearance on Chai With Chithra, Karthik opened up about the possibility of directing Ajith and revealed that there have been conversations in the past.
“I think there is a possibility. I’ve tried too. We did speak. Actually, it didn’t go to the stage of producing a film or anything, but there was a discussion at least at the level of narrating a story. But it isn’t happening at the moment. Still, I’m looking forward to it. I want it to happen too,” Karthik said.
The fan, identifying himself as an Ajith admirer who also enjoys Karthik’s films, recalled watching Petta and Viswasam during their same-day release and said Karthik’s films leave audiences with a feel-good, relaxed and positive experience—before asking why the filmmaker has still not collaborated with Ajith.
Karthik’s response has now sparked excitement among fans, many of whom have long wished to see what a Karthik Subbaraj–Ajith Kumar film would look like.
Known for crafting distinct cinematic worlds with films such as Jigarthanda, Jigarthanda DoubleX and Petta, Karthik most recently directed Retro starring Suriya. The filmmaker has also continued expanding his footprint as a producer through Stone Bench Creations.
Having helmed 9 outings, Karthik Subbaraj has a milestone 10th directorial, as he is set to collaborate with veteran musician Ilaiyaraaja for the first time. The film marks Ilaiyaraaja's 1540th project as composer. The latter is celebrating his golden jubilee year as a composer. The yet-to-be-titled film commenced production in Madurai with a pooja ceremony back in November 2025. Backed by Guneet Monga and Achin Jain's Sikhya Entertainment banner, the director is yet to reveal details about the film's cast.
