Director RJ Balaji's Karuppu released on Prime Video earlier this Friday. Even amidst the digital premiere of the film, it continues its theatrical run. Earlier today, the film's producer Dream Warrior Pictures announced that the Suriya starrer has earned more than 340 crore from theatres worldwide.
It has become the highest-grossing Suriya film of all time. The makers describe it as "The roaring divine blockbuster of the year" while revealing that it has entered "its unbeatable fifth week" in theatres.
Karuppu tells the story of the titular God (Suriya) who comes to Earth and becomes a saviour of people, suffering from systemic injustice. The film also stars Trisha, Indrans, Swasika, Anagha Maya Ravi, and Supreeth Reddy, among others.
The film's music by Sai Abhyankkar has become quite popular, with tracks such as 'God Mode' and 'Verappa' becoming chartbusters. The visual effects and cinematography departments also earned much appreciation for their work on the film. However, critics have mostly been negative about the film's screenplay. Recently, RJ Balaji told The Hollywood Reporter India that the fact that critics panned the film is an indicator of how they are not in touch with the reality of the audience, in terms of what they like and dislike in theatres.
In our review, Avinash Ramachandran wrote, "The writing doesn’t really allow Saravanan to do much other than walk in slow-motion, don his sunglasses, do a couple of Suriya mannerisms, and find himself feeding into the never-ending trend of references from the star’s filmography. Here, they go a couple of steps more to bring in references from other stars, too. Some work, while others don’t, and more importantly, most of them don’t serve the story, and that’s where Karuppu misses the trick."
