Actor Dhanush shared an emotional note reflecting on the career and struggles of tennis legend Rafael Nadal after watching a recent documentary on the Spanish star, describing the experience as overwhelming and calling Nadal his personal “GOAT”.

In a social media post addressed directly to Nadal, Dhanush clarified that his message was not promotional in nature but came from a long-time admirer who had spent years following the tennis icon’s journey. The actor said watching the documentary gave him a new perspective on Nadal’s career and made him rethink moments when, as a fan, he had reacted emotionally to defeats on court.

“Without knowing the pain, the stress and the anxiety you were carrying, I regret all those times I shouted at the TV when you lost a point, a set, or a match,” Dhanush wrote, recalling how he would urge Nadal to perform better during difficult moments.

Reflecting on Nadal’s widely discussed on-court rituals, Dhanush said he now viewed them differently. According to him, habits such as arranging water bottles, adjusting his appearance, or repeating routines were not merely superstitions but appeared to be part of the athlete’s way of dealing with pressure, anxiety and the physical burden of elite competition. “You were fighting your own demons long before you stepped onto the court to fight anyone else,” he wrote.

Dhanush also spoke about Nadal’s ability to sustain excellence despite repeated injuries and a long-documented chronic foot condition. He said imagining what Nadal might have achieved without those limitations was difficult, while noting how narrowly contested the debate around Grand Slam records remains.

Acknowledging that many fans place the statistical edge with Novak Djokovic and credit Roger Federer for redefining the sport aesthetically, Dhanush said Nadal would always remain his greatest player. “Thank you, Rafa, for sacrificing your body and soul for tennis and inspiring millions with your resilience, humility and fighting spirit,” he wrote.
