Madras High Court has given its verdict in a three-decades-long defamation case filed by actor Sukanya against Sun TV Network. According to reports, it has upheld a trial court verdict asking that the actor be paid 10.01 lakh in compensation. The decision comes almost 30 years after she filed a case against the television network.

What is the case about?

Reportedly, Sukanya filed a case alleging that defamatory remarks were made regarding her in a conversation involving Veerappan in Sun TV's Nerukku Ner program. Eleven years ago, the court gave a verdict in the actor's favour and ordered that she be paid 10.01 lakh in damages. However, the television network challenged the trial court verdict against them with an appeal filed at the Madras High Court.

What did the High Court say in the latest verdict?

The court dismissed the appeal, going against the lower court, and said that media outlets must broadcast the content only after checking and verifying it. HC also found that the television channel had complete control over what it was broadcasting prior to the interview, hence it could have deleted or cut out the defamatory portions of it.
