The makers of Padaiyaanda Maaveeraa are facing flak for the depiction of Veerappan in the film. According to Muthulakshmi, the late bandit's wife, the film portrayed him incorrectly. "When I am there, how can they portray my husband in a wrong way?" she said in a rhetorical way. The film directed by V Gowthaman takes inspiration from the events in politician Kaduvetti Guru's life. For the uninitiated, Kaduvetti Guru's sibling Senthamarai worked with Muthulakshmi as part of the party Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi.
Gowthaman also stars in the film in the role of Kaduvetti Guru, alongside an ensemble cast that includes Pujita Ponnada, Samuthirakani, Saranya Ponvannan, Prabhakar, Redin Kingsley, Aadukalam Naren, and Ilavarasu. Nirmal Saravanaraj produced the film alongside S Krishnamoorthy under their banner VK Productions. It hit theatres on September 19, Friday. It marked Gowtham's comeback to direction after a long break.
Gowthaman had revealed that Padaiyaanda Maaveeraa would document much history of people in Tamil Nadu. "My lifetime goal is to tell the world about the history of the heroes who lived in Santhanakadu, Mundhirikadu, and Vannikadu regions, in an uncompromised manner. Padaiyaanda Maaveeraa is an epic story of a real hero who protected the land and honour," the actor-filmmaker stated.
