Earlier, we reported about director Vignesh Karthick's Hot Spot 2 Much creating some discourse on the internet about the film's themes. One of the thematic elements of the Hot Spot sequel that critics pointed out is its take on women's freedom to wear clothes how they wish to. They found it problematic in a way that is similar to Aan Paavam Pollathathu's allegedly skewed exploration of female agency and rights.
Amid the intense backlash for his film, director Vignesh himself took to social media to hit back at the critics the other day. In a post, the filmmaker sarcastically expressed his 'gratitude' to the critics for "bashing" his film. Vignesh also said that he would have contacted the maker of such a film personally if he had any objections to it. Referring to the critics, he wrote, you "chose otherwise, may be that's what you call feminism I guess."
The director also clarified a particular scene that talks about female agency in Hot Spot 2 Much to get back at the critics. "Coming to your questions about the film. The dress thing was never about a girl. PBS (Priya Bhavani Shankar's character) clearly explains it in the next scene. Even in the payback scene, the father says, "your freedom of dress is never a problem for me, when its your world. It's only when my world and your collide, the problem arises". It is basically a discussion about a generation gap," the filmmaker explained.
Vignesh also pointed out how the audience did not criticise him when the first Hot Spot film "bashed men". Referring to it, he wrote, "When I bashed men in Hotspot one, in Janani iyer's "Thakkali chutney" it worked bigtime for you. But now when i so cautiously try to take a neutral stand, discussing both the sides, you cant tolerate it is it? Is it not hypocrisy?"
